XR400 throttle sticking after carb rebuild

Recommended Posts

I recently rebuilt the carb on my new '96 XR400 and the throttle is sticking really bad only when it's running. When it's not running, the throttle works smoothly and snaps back to idle like it should.

When it's running, the throttle slide sticks really bad just above idle. I'm assuming the vacuum from the engine is causing it to jam and stick.

Should the slide be lubricated with anything specific? I just sprayed a little WD40 on it when I put it back together.

The only time I ever had a slide stick is when I reinstalled in wrong. You might want to double check it. Somehow I had it turned completely around if I remember correctly.

Make sure the hole at the bottom of the slide is not covered. I'm not sure that if you installed the lifter arm 180* out that the assembly would go together properly, but if it does and you covered the hole, it's wrong. Should look like the picture.

But as was mentioned, check cable routing too.

Check carb end of the cable connections to the carb.

Make sure you got the throttle cam return spring installed properly.
