Cam 180 out?

Can the cam be installed 180 degrees wrong and the bike run properly? I recently had new SS ProX valves and Athena top end replaced in my 2006 250x. The bike is running great, but has 15 hours now, so I decided to check valve clearance, the same way I have done several times before. When I lined up the dot on the side gear with the triangle on the right engine case, the cam lobes were facing forward instead of to the rear. The cam marks are parallel to the top of the head.

What is going on?

so if it was running fine,  and you didn't remove the cam or have the cam chain off,  why not try and turn the crank shaft over 360 degrees and see what happens ??

LOL. My luck it would bend the valves or something. I'm gonna talk to the shop that made the repairs on Monday. I was just baffled from how this could work and wanted to know if anyone had ever heard of such.

yes,  spin it around to where the dot lines up again, the cam turns a 1/2 turn for every full turn of the crank.

Thanks for clearing that up. I must have gotten lucky the other few times I had checked the valves.
