Sudden loss of power

Recommended Posts

I was out on my KTM 250 EXC today riding with my friends we were riding full throttle down some a roads then as we slowed down at a junction, i went to pull of again the bike wouldn't move properly?

It runs fine and idles still but the exhaust note has got louder and it feels like a 50cc moped when i had to ride it home.

Any ideas what this could be?

(The whole bike was rebuild 600 miles ago)

Update: checked plug, checked ignition, checked carb, nothing unusual.

Check reeds, check tranny oil for blow through, check silencer to see if packing blew out, check head pipe for major leak, check radiator for exhaust blow though, check head gaskets.

I have found the problem.

The powervalve was stuck shut, the retaining plates in both powervalve covers had come loose even with loctite!!

In fact the right hand mechanism ripped the screws right out of the head and one was lodged on the adjuster hole.

There is around 20mm of thread available but the bolts KTM supply are only around 8mm long, what a stupid design!

If you have a 2002 model KTM 250 i would check these bolts asap and replace for longer ones!!!
