KYB Yamaha IT175G '80 shock rebound to slow

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody,

I've modified the Kayaba shock of my old Yamaha IT175G '80 with more actual internals: a Öhlins piston and valving according to the Öhlins YA3670 specification card, with is the one for the YZ250G.

The compression damping seems to be fine, but the rebound is way to slow.

The damper has a 46 mm cylinder and a 14 mm piston rod.

I started with the following shims stack (rebound): (diameter / thickness, in mm)
34 x .20
30 x .20 + 34/30 x .25 ring shim (0.05 preload)
34 x .20 (x2)
30 x .20
26 x .25
23 x .30
20 x .30
20 x 2.00 stop washer

Last try:

34 x .20 (x2)
28 x .20
23 x .30
20 x .30
20 x 2.00 stop washer

Static test (just pushing on the bike) shows that the hispeed rebound is now probably a bit to fast, but the mid- and lowspeed rebound is still to slow.

The piston has no bypass bore.

Has someone an idea how I should proceed further?

Go back to the preloaded setup with one shim under the preload shim ie 34.2
