SP500 suggestions

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I'm relatively new to TT but would like some opinions. I have a 1981 Suzuki SP500 that someone stripped all the lights off of. Runs good, has been a great trail machine. I also have an XR600R that I made into a dual sport. I'm curious if I should bother putting lights back on the SP or just sell it and be happy with the XR only. The dilemma I'm in is whether to put time and money into the SP, and if I do, it has a 6v lighting coil and no battery, making it harder to convert back to dual sport. What do you guys think?

The SP500 did have a battery as standard, it was the US spec DR500 that was batteryless. Are you sure it is an SP500? .. Most DR500's have an Engine No. Starting SP500-xxxxxx. Check the headstock for the frame no. Also someone may have changed the stator - to confirm for an SP500 there should be 2 wires to a plug from the pickup (Green and Orange) to the CDI, 2 Wires to a plug for power to the CDI (Grey and Brown) and then 2 separate wires - Pink for Lighting and White/Red for the battery circuit. If you have that stator then you need an SP500 loom(cheap on Ebay) an aftermarket ignition switch(cheap on Ebay) a battery tray, left switch gear, a Regulator and a rectifier. You can then add any after market lights you need .. and a horn if you wish.

Thanks for the reply. The head stock of the frame says SP500. I purchased a loom on eBay and it was extremely cheap and came with everything I needed even a horn. Project is on the back burner still as I picked up a YZ250 project and have an XR600 that are both eating up my time. Thanks for all the info!
