a little smoke

Recommended Posts

Like @Wild Alaskan says - probably your rings. Probably getting as little blowby on your piston rings. Have you checked your oil for a gasoline smell? If so then you're rings are leaking a little and once it warms they expand and the smoking goes away as they seal better.

That's typically caused by oil that gets left in the head above the valves after shutdown leaking past the valve guides/seals while the bike is stored before next ride. Then next start up, that oil that has leaked into the cylinder is burned away quickly and the exhaust clears up. Needs attention but no big deal. Just be aware of if/when it starts to get worse and regularly check your engine oil level.

This^^.  Worn rings would cause smoking all the time.  Not a huge deal, replacing the seals is easy enough with a $25 valve spring compressor off ebay.  If you do decide to do this make sure you use OEM valve seals, I had a post up here a couple years ago about my problem with aftermarket.  And for a head gasket, the best there is is the layered steel one from Cometic.  Those can also be purchased from a number of vendors on ebay.  And make sure you use a steel valve cover gasket, OEM.  The paper ones that come in some kits are not acceptable.
