I just bought a 2017 drz400sm I do a lot of freeway riding. I was wondering if it was possible to put a 16-38 ratio on my bike becauSe I'm having a hard time finding a 16t sprocket

I'd suggest either a 38-39 rear or just a 16 front. Not both. But yes. A must mod for riders that primarily cruise on the freeway. Not so great for those who bomb the backroads

I have 16/39 right now. It's not that bad on mine, but yours is stock. Be sure to do the intake mods and rejet. Otherwise acceleration and torque will be extra painful.

Motostrano sells 37 and 38. Can't remember who makes 16, but I have one that the PO installed.

So you think using a 38 or 39 with the stock 15T front ?

Personally yes. But that's just my opinion. If feel it's a great compromise between all the set ups you can choose from. 

 

But the front sprocket is so much easier to deal with and remove. I would just stick with that and see where it takes you

Driven is the preferred 16T sprocket cue to diameter, chain guard (on case) may need clearancing.   15/39 is the common ratio.   16/39 is great for cruising flat terrain, hills or head wind will suck.
