I have a 1989 XR250r and do not own a manual for it, I need to no whether you are meant to screw the dipstick in or leave it sitting on top to check the oil level.

I don't know about that. Does an '89 carry its oil in the frame like the later models? Checking it immediately would be prudent if the dipstick location was on the frame like the later models. And since the dipstick location is at the crankcase, maybe it doesn't even matter if its checked cold or not.  ??

Way back in the mid 80s I had an XR500R, and if memory serves correct it did make a difference, and that difference was COLD! ?  But, yes, it is a huge difference on the later bikes...warm.  Too many people overfill their XRs, they ought to make the oil check procedure a sticky, especially since it is opposite on the different bikes.
