Cottonwood Pass - closed until 2019!

Recommended Posts

Most of us knew it was gonna be closed this year for sure and prolly into 2018. Actually it'll be into 2019!!

From FB this morning:

Chaffee County Commissioner Keith Baker

"Here's some straight skinny on the Cottonwood Pass Rd/CR 306 project:

The plan is for the Pass to be closed for two "seasons" - 2017 and 2018 - for the Gunnison project, but when you add it all up, from last fall to sometime in 2019, it's closer to three "years". The Gunny project caught people over here by surprise, but we were able to scramble and get our east side project approved for 2018. Our side will be open to the summit this year. The full length will be available next winter to snowmobilers, skiers, and snowshoers, then the Pass will close again. At some point during the 2018 east side construction, the plan is to close the road just west of the entrance to Rainbow Lake. Keeping the road open beyond there would require about $900,000 in traffic control measures that could be better spent on the road improvements.

Please share this information with others. Many people plan their vacations around hiking certain segments of the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail (CDNST), the Colorado Trail (CT), or climbing certain 14ers. All of those will be open and accessible by other routes, but it's important for people to know so they can plan accordingly. Backcountry Hunters & Anglers should also have this information.

Please ask any questions you have and ask for clarifications. If I don't know the answer, I'll get it for you."
