CR250 shut off and won't restart

I was out riding with a friend recently on my 1993 cr250, and after about 45 minutes of riding it sounded like it bogged down and shut off. I have checked everything on the bike and can not figure out what the problem is. The top end was rebuilt last summer and it has great compression, and the reeds are only a few months old and are sealing flat. The first thing I did was clean the carb, which didn't help at all. I tore the whole engine apart looking for something and found nothing so I put it all back together with new gaskets. It had spark, but I read somewhere that it's possible if your ignition coil goes bad the spark won't be strong enough to fire. I replaced the coil and still no help. I checked to make sure the timing marks on the stator were lining up. It is definitely getting spark, and it is getting fuel because the plug is wet. The weird part is every once in a while it will start when I kick it but only for a about 5 to 10 seconds. I can't even get it to act like it wants to start if i spray choke cleaner in it. The only other thing I think it could possibly be is the cdi box, but I wanted to see if anyone had any other ideas before I go spend $150 on one. Is it possible for the cdi box to go bad but still get a spark? I appreciate any ideas, thanks in advance.

Have you done a compression test on it, or a leak down test? That is the next thing I would. You need at least 165PSI for a healthy running engine. Yes, they may run on less PSI, but I'd consider anything lower time for a top end.

I bought a used CR250 that the previous owner swore was a running bike. I got it home and it would not start.. I kicked & kicked with only a few sputters here & there.. Finally I did a compression test.. 155 psi. Called PO he said he "just put a new piston in it". Tore it down, and sure enough it had a new piston in it.. And cylinder that was worn completely out. Cylinder replate, new piston & rings, and she fired right up.

More likely the stator is failing. Doubt it is the CDI or coil.


If the stator was going bad could it still have a spark on every revolution?
Have you done a compression test on it, or a leak down test? That is the next thing I would. You need at least 165PSI for a healthy running engine. Yes, they may run on less PSI, but I'd consider anything lower time for a top end.

I will give it a compression test but to me it just seems like it couldn't be that since it ran fine for almost an hour and out of no where just cut out.

Yes, the spark may even be visible but not strong enough to fire under compression. It is a more common fail point than a CDI or ignition coil.

I've never had a stator go bad. When they go do they just go like my situation or do they slowly start to work less and less?

I just tested the stator and there is no continuity between the two power output wires and none between the two ignition wires. On the two output wires I am getting a resistance of 85 ohms and on the two ignition wires I am getting a resistance of 232 ohms. I watched a video on YouTube on how to check a stator and those numbers are much higher than what they got

So..... do those numbers fall in to the range for your particular bike? Also be aware, stators may 'test' right with a meter but not function properly during actual operation.

Depending on the stator design,. either there should only be continuity between the power output wires and none to ground or no continuity between the power wires and also there should be continuity to ground (using ground as a common connection). What does your manual say?

Ok this is a long shot which has happened to my sons cr80

while out riding the bike just stoped , and after checking everything like you have I was stumped ,until I check the needle in the carburettor , the circlip that holds the needle in place had broken ? ( not sure how).
