2 Questions about Sprocket Ratios and Tire Size

Recommended Posts

Question #1:  Is there any advantage or disadvantage to using a larger sprocket set even though you keep the same ratio?  For instance, a 12F/48R vs. a 13F/52R?  I think the larger set might last longer (wear slower), but will the engine feel any difference?

Question #2:  Does putting a larger diameter tire on rear give the same (or opposite) effect as using a larger rear sprocket?  I actually know the answer to this one, but curious what others think.  I recently changed from a worn trials tire to a new knobby (both 18" rim) and was surprised to find the gearing seemed different.

13/52 is better.

Larger rear tire is like smaller rear sprocket. More distance traveled per engine revolution.

Might seem like everyone answers this way, but it depends if u want to do slow technical enduro or fast mx around a track.

13/52 is better because the chain, the slider, and CS gear will last longer.  I run 12T up front and replace it a lot!

Bigger dia rear = taller feeling gears.
