Notchy brake lever?

Recommended Posts

The brake lever on my "new to me" 2004 RM250 is kind of notchy and sticky feeling.  When I start to squeeze the brake lever, it's not a very smooth feeling....it almost feels like something in the master cylinder is binding a little bit.  The front brake works great, it just has an odd feel to it.

Should I just replace the master cylinder assembly, or should I look at something else first?

Bleed the brakes first.  New fluid should make the lever pull feel better.  If its still sticky feeling, pull the front brake lever, now lift the rubber dust cover for the master cylinder plunger up enough to spray a little bit of WD-40 or PB Blaster into the plunger.  It only takes one small spray of lube to free up the plunger.  This will lube the plunger and stop the sticky feeling.  No, it will not contaminate the brake fluid.

Thanks for the advice!  I sprayed some WD-40 into the brake plunger, and that smoothed everything out.  Nice and smooth now. Thanks!!
