82 XR200R Swingarm upgrade?

Recommended Posts

Are there any aluminum pieces that will work on the early XR200Rs? I've seen lots of reference to XR250 swingarms and linkage working on the later frames, is there anything that works on the early frame? It looks like the shock is more offset to the left than the later ones.

1986 - 1989 XR250R aluminum swing arm will bolt rite on.   1984/85 shock linkage is needed to run a 1995 - 2004 XR250R shock which will give you compression and rebound as well as slightly stiffer spring and almost 4 more inches of rear wheel travel because the shock shaft has almost 2" more travel.  Your seat will be about 3" higher. Run the stock 250R spring with about 1.5" of sag and the spring will be just rite (very plush bit won't bottom) if your 190 - 210 lbs. If your lighter you may want a spring with a lower rate.  You'll have to trim about 3/4" off the bottom shock mount/clevis and drill a new hole.  In my opinion the XR250R KYB shock is a much better option than paying $1,000 for a Works Performance shock.  I used my stock XR200R swingarm because I couldn't find a 86-89 XR250R aluminum swingarm at a good price.  I'll swap it out later.  In one of the pics you can see where I filed just the corner edge off the linkage where it travels through the shock mount.  It wasn't necessary but I did it anyways.

The OP has an early XR200R which is different than the 84-02 versions.  (86+ XR200R used the 84-84 XR200R/250R chassis)

The conversion method used in the previous post will dramatically raise the seat compared to stock 93-02 XR200Rs, and will raise the seat on a 84-91 XR200Rs about 2 inches. It also reduces steering rake 2 degrees which upsets the handling of the bike, stability at speed will be like a Trials bike.

At full extension the linkage ratio is about 4:1 so one inch longer shock will raise the seat 4", 1/4" longer shock about 1".
The shock used in the previous post is 1 1/4" longer than a stock 84-91 shock and only 3/4" was removed so the seat height at full extension will be 2" taller than stock 84-91.
