'13 500exc rear tire size

Recommended Posts

I'm a new 500 owner and I want to know what everyone uses as a rear tire and what size.

The guy I bought the bike from had a bridgestone m204  100/100-18 on the rear.   Seemed kinda small for such a torquey engine.      I replaced it with a 120/100-18 GoldenTyre GT232N.    Its a lot taller now at at 5-9 I am on the very tip of my toes when sitting on it.   I'll have to adjust.    I do have the Fatty front tire on it as well which raises the bike on both ends.

Question... is the 100/100-18 really too small for the 500?     What size does everyone else run on the rear?

The oem sizes for the rear tire are 140-80-18 or 110-100-18. 120-100-18 is allmost the same as the 140-80 but a bit higher (+8mm in diameter).
The 110-100-18 will suit the bike and might help you a bit with the general height.

No 18" rims are perfect for the EXC-F's or rather most off-road use, the 18" rim supports a taller tire which means more side wall for comfort going over obstacles. The 19" rims are typically used for MX bike with less side wall. Both rim sizes have tire choices that support knobs on the edges to aid in turns/traction. Although I typically use a 110 or 120/100-18 on my 450/500's. I go 120 or larger on the xr600r. Hope this helps you some, just a short to the point answer...

I'm running a 140/80/18 and pretty happy (FE501S). If I was surrounded by really hardcore trails full of tight turns and switchbacks I would opt for a more narrow tire, or possibly too to achieve faster cornering on an mx track.. but for maximum traction and straight line stability, hard to beat the wider tire.

*edit*

By the way, I just checked and a 140/80-18 is about the same size as a 120/100-18.

Maybe compensate with a bit of extra sag or buy yourself a low seat
