XR400 fork brace worthwhile ?

Yes, definitely. One of the best suspension mods I've done.

i see now where it fits - is clogging with mud ever a problem ?

If it clogs with mud, it's a sign that you shouldn't be riding.

I have the SRC fork brace, would definitely recommend it.  

Not sure if you can find those any more, but super brace still makes fork braces for the XR.

The SRC is what I put on mine several years ago. It was discontinued along time ago. The Superbrace is probably the most available unit today.

Turned the spindly, deflecting XR forks into Trail Terminators.

more worried about small piece of wood between the tire and brace causing  unwanted braking of the frt.tire at the wrong time.lots of small sticks here in the nw

Any friction anywhere anytime sucks. Thats why we want a brace...stability

Id much rather get a stabilizer. Ive had much success with them. Even Chinese ones. I have no braces. I use stabilizers

They should do different things. You cannot Grind ruts with precision with a damper and no brace. Believe me I've tried.

I would agree. I look at it like, a steering damper controls undesirable movement in the steering due to forces introduced by the terrain. A brace improves tracking of the front end and helps the front end resist those forces introduced by terrain "before" it effects steering.
