1986 600r

Hello noooooob to bikes 

I have just got a 600r 1986 honda 

Should it have power/ lights before it starts up or only after it is running

If it is stock, lights only come on after started. There is no switch to turn them on, correct? Unless someone installed battery back-up light kit for street legal use. Does it have a title & tag? Welcome to the forums! Tell us a little about your back ground, riding what & when. Do you know the correct starting procedure for the xr, so you dont hurt yourself or kicker?

very new to motorcycles, in general, haven't ridden in 35 or so years. 

No idea if it has battery backup light kit. it does have front light and tail light also turn signals front. just traded for it the guy I got it from started it right up but I am having trouble getting it going so I was wondering if it needs a battery or something. does it make its own spark when kicked? and then the lights turn on. It doesn't have a key just a switch. I may try and restore it to original and will be researching into that.

Its an Alternating Current dirt bike
A FACTORY manual is the best and first thing 'you should buy for your baby. Its a 30 year old bike. Put new worn parts on and it'll go thirty more years. Original is a tough word to stick by

The title of your post is missing some important info. Is it a xl600r or an xr600r?

Either way spark is independent from lighting circuits.
