Use the choke to start a cold engine

Use the hot start to restart a hot engine eg after a stall or crash

4 strokes can be tempermental to start when hot.

The hot start bleeds in more air to lean off the mixture much like holding throttle open on a two stroke but do8ng this on a 4 stroke will put more fuel in due to accelrator pump

I have a 04 and use hot start every time I start a hot engine.  Will normally start right up on 1 kick.

Yes use it when ever trying to start a hot engine

You will not damage anything by using it even if its not needed. Its trail and error to learn when to use it on your bike.

Rule of thumb is if the engine is hot then you'll need to use it to get engine restarted.

Worst case if you dont use it when needed is engine wont start, and same if you use and engine isnt hot enough to need it, it just wont start.
