DRZ400 fuel tank help...

Recommended Posts

Hey guys what's up...So I starter a complete rebuild on a 2000 DRZ400S since July of 2016... See if you guys can help I recently bought a stock gas tank from eBay. The old one that  originally came with the bike was rusted and dented pretty bad. My question is that there is a whole port on the gas tank not where the petcock sits, my original gas tank never came with it can I block it or do I need it? Thanks for the help guys..

That is a California emissions spec tank, not a normal fed emissions tank.I think that nipple is for the tank's vent hose and it goes to the charcoal canister. Not a good idea to cap it as the tank probably wouldn't vent and the motor will eventually stall out after a few minutes of riding.Did you get the original gas cap with the tank?I don't think that tank will accept the standard gas cap of the fed models.I think you can connect a fuel vent hose to that nipple and run it along the frame's spine and over the handlebars but I'm not sure.Perhaps a Cali. member can chime in and give more accurate advice about the vent hose routing.

i realize that, that's why i mentioned the California model evaporative canister. They are located on the left rear subframe, near the battery.

Yes I believe you just run a hose down to the other carb vent hoses. Near the shock.

That cali tank has an internal vent;http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b195/Kenrock1000/DRZremoval003.jpg

From what I've learned you can run a hose from that nipple down in front of the rear shock with the other carb and coolant lines.

You can read all about the procedures here;https://www.thumpertalk.com/forums/topic/320609-smog-cannister-removal-how-to/

You don't need the charcoal canister, you're getting confused,I'm just telling you what the tank nipple is for, what it does and where it originally went. You still need to have the proper california spec cap as a regular drz cap won't fit that tank.
