the latest project.

owner couldnt find the title, but 1 week later he handed me a certified copy.

barely ran, petcock leaked, carb overflowed, wouldnt shift into 3rd, front brake mushy, forks feel strange.

94 SE engine, CDI & harness. 98 or 99 gas tank, dirt headlight, no instruments, dented header, bent battery mounts, etc.

Not looking too bad, keep us appraised as to how things are going.  I bought a 1999 DR-350 SE a couple of weeks ago.

So, if the XR650L is the Big Red Pig (BRP) then what are the DR-350s, the Medium Large White Pigs?

replaced petcock from big clarke tank i'm not using.

replaced carburetor with a spare BST33 already setup.

duct-taped the airbox to near-stock.

replaced throttle cables with a spare set.

starts and runs normally now.

re-index the clutch arm, but still wont shift into 3rd.

Looks spotless inside!  I had read warnings about that bolt that holds the shift ratchet in place coming loose and causing problems.

the shift drum cam stopper. you can see it connected to the red spring

Thanks, always trying to improve my knowledge.  Any ideas as to how that got bent?  The shift shaft I totally under stand as I have bent a few of those on various bikes over the years.  That shaft must have been fun to get out!

it can get mangled when torquing the drum bolt without removing the red spring. i know this from experience.

the shaft came out easier than i'da thought. tapped out with a wooden dowel

That's surprising, but fortunate for you.  I know I have changed at least two of those shift shafts out on Yamaha motorcycles that I have owned in the past but I don't recall how much pain if any was involved.
