Replace broken spoke

Recommended Posts

The rear wheel of my 83 XR200 was re-laced a couple of years ago. Haven't put too many miles on it but must've broken a spoke on my last trip to Moab. I have spare new spokes from the re-lacing - can I just replace the broken one myself? Can I do it with the tire still installed? My search-foo is failing me...

Thanks!

Usually you can, assuming the spoke is not seized in the nipple. Remove the broken spoke. Let teh air out of the tire. Install the new spoke and put a little anti-sieze on the threads. Press the nipple into the rim just far enough to get the spoke in it and tighten it up. Check all the spokes for tight and the rim for true.
