People are cheap hackers

I never understand why someone wouldn't spend $12 on a tool to do something right instead of trying to hack something and risk damaging a part far more expensive. "I'll just use this here Autozone gear puller, that'll probably work " 

 

Luckily the previous so called mechanic didn't trash the stator in the process :facepalm:

Some of the early 90's and late 80's bikes i have snagged over the years have had some really interesting DIY's.  Boggles the mind, some people should not be allowed to wrench on a bike.

Crank bearings hand packed with grease - No seals
Engines and transmissions filled to THE TOP with oil.
Chains as tight as a banjo string.
"Rebuilt" engines hat will never run again.
Bikes like this...

My favourite is where the guys uncle who knows a bit about dirtbikes has" had a crack " at getting the top end off and smashed a nice big flat blade screwdriver into the base of the cylinder..........
