E85 in a dirt bike?

Recommended Posts

has anybody tried to use E85 in a dirt bike? specifically a carbed one?

I wonder what the results would be as far as needing to adjust jets, power gain, and fuel consumption.

It will not affect jetting. Mileage and performance will decrease (though doubtful anyone would notice) as E fuels have a lower BTU rating. The more ethanol, the lower the BTU.

The real problem with E85 is are the parts in the fuel system E85 compatible? Will the rubbers and plastics remain intact and not turn into goo.

I would expect in have to increase jet size.  E85 requires more fuel to reach a stoichiometric mixture.  If I remember correctly 9.6:1 with E85 is like 14.7:1 with gas.

In terms of chemical compatibility I would not expect any issues.  MX bikes are designed to handle racing fuels as well as pump gas.  Alcohol/methanol should not be a problem.
