Fork uppers damage

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Been stripping down my bike and while taking the forks off, noticed that the uppers were... corroded? degraded? I'm not quite sure how to explain it. What it looks like is that whatever metal is underneath the gold/silver coating has bubbled/expanded through the coating, swelling to increase the overall diameter, which made it bloody tough to slide them out of the clamps.

I'll post a photo in a couple of hour when I get home.

Is this really an issue, other than not looking very good and being hard to fit/remove?

Here's a photo

Looks to me like its alloy rust. Is this much of a problem?

Clean it well an drop some superglue. It will prevent it from getting worse.

On bigger surfaces epoxy would do as well.

Yeah right. Some of it is where the forks are clamped, so probably not the best idea to add extra layers of glue there

I'm painting my frame with 2 pack soon anyway, so could I sand the whole fork uppers back and then paint them along with the  frame? Has anyone done this before?
