'85 Honda XR350R long term shut down

Question. I've read about parking a XR for a length of time that you should turn the engine over until the valves are closed? Which valves is the question? Thanks for any replies.

You don't need to do that at all. I had my 85 XR350 for 20 years. It sat in my fathers barn in Colorado for 10 years, hours up the mountain top where temperatures are very extreme with no exhaust header on it. I got it shipped back to me in New Jersey and installed a new header and did an oil change and it started in 3 kicks.

And it still runs perfect to this day

if storing for a long time best to drain the fuel tank and carb. and sit bike up on a stand so as the tyres don't get flat spots and crack.

Left intake valve, right intake valve, left exhaust valve and one other. Can't remember which one. Maybe the right exhaust valve.
