Difference between a 98 kx 250 and a 2002

Recommended Posts

Hi, New guy here, thanks to everyone who supports the forum. I picked up what I was told was a 2002 kx250 last Wednesday, its a beater so I planed on fixing it up and riding the old 2track logging roads of norther WI, I have no intention on racing this bike, way to old now. I had a chance to clean it up yesterday after work and made a couple of unwelcome discoveries. The seller told me it was an 02, had a small fuel leak and a broken clutch cable. Seemed easy enough, so I bought it for 700. I've been waiting for the cable so I haven't ridden the bike yet. After the clean up I discovered the cases where cracked and had the typical JB Weld smeared on them, so no fuel leak it all oil baby. I decided to get the vin off the bike to make sure I was looking for the right parts to make the repair. Thanks to all the hard work for forum members it was easy to decode the vin, turn out its a 1998! well I'm pissed. My question is what is the difference between these 2 years? and what would you do? I have a bill of sale stating it a 2002 so legally I'm entitled to a full refund.

Difference between 98-02 , 1st gear in the 98 lower gearing ,plastics , forks are changed to 48mm in 02 ,that's all I can think of at the moment . people love the 98' not a big deal to me . The bikes not that far from a 02 . The cracked cases is my main concern you should post a couple pics of the bike and of the cracked cases .

Raced a 98 then a 03 back then. Honestly bought the same both good bikes they can take a beating.  Both front forks were clunkers we use to call them lol ever Kawasaki back then.  Spungy brakes and clunker forks.  You probably won't have that problem at all. I wouldn't be disappointed the 98 is great

for 700 bucks your probably not gonna get an 02 in better shape. but if you want to get out from under it cause of the cracked case you might have an angle
