Stem lock removal - 300rr

Recommended Posts

I have a 2017 300rr I bought used and the previous owner lost the key to the steering stem lock.  I bought the plug to replace the locking mechanism but can't figure out how to remove it.  Any direction would be appreciated.

You're better off leaving the existing lock in place and capping it with an inexpensive 7/8" (22mm) furniture leg cap, as shown below.

The expensive plug sold by Beta is round shaped, but the hole left behind by the steering lock is keyhole shaped (round, with a square section underneath.)  If you don't seal the hole completely with something you'll get water and debris in the steering head, where it will wreak havoc on the steering bearings etc.

^ ^ ^ Very nice, thanks for the suggestion reminds me that I need to do the same thing. Last summer I replaced my triple clamp stem bearings and found that water gets in every time you wash the bike and things get a bit grodey in there.  Meant to cover it but as usual spaced it out over time.
