XL 600 air filter?

On the 87' xl600 the flat air filter slides in, in the owners manual it looks like  the cage is visible from the back, is this correct? normally an air cleaner cage is inside the element facing the air boot. Uni element

The cage does go to carb side. Don't know why honda parts lay out has it that way.

I had in in both ways, it looks like a better chance of sealing the outside edge when installed as shown, goofy set up for such an important function, don't care for it, the XR set up was better
