PW 80 Kick starter reassembly

Hi, new to this forum and trying to repair a PW 80 for a friend. Trying to put the kicker back together, it wont cooperate. I get the shaft in where it sits nicely, but when I attempt to wind the return spring, the shaft pops out about a 1/4 inch and wont go back in, so I can't get the cover on. Spent 4 hours on it tonight and am about to pour gas on it and have a fire. On the occasions that I got the shaft to stay put, the spring will pop off as I try to fit the cover. I build vintage British road bikes and never had this much trouble with anything on them. Help!

I don't know what to do but try searching for a forum on this topic or Google it that's what I would do

I've searched and searched, there's very little info out there. BUT... I got it back together- I have been trying this with the clutch basket on and although it makes no sense as far as I can see, it will only go together with the basket off. WHICH brings me to my next question. The clutch hub nut- is there a torque value for it and should it be held with loctite?
