XR400 fork shim mod

Recommended Posts

I've read that reducing the compression shims in an XR400 is recommend, and that these sit at the bottom of the fork.

Do i need a special tool as the manual suggests to dismantle the fork enough to get to the stack. I have an impact wrench and this will often undo bolts without the need to hold the other side, but is re-assembley going to be an issue without the special tool ?

You can get it loose without something to hold the damper, by using an impact, yes.

When putting it back together, if you can at least get it started by hand, an impact might tighten up without the tool but I wouldn't count on it.

After getting it started, put the spring in and install the fork cap on the damper rod end properly and get the fork cap started in the tube. Spring pressure on the damper will often be enough to keep it from spinning while tightening the bottom bolt.

If not, you can make a home made tool out of a piece of 1"id black pipe. I posted pictures and a how to in this forum about a month ago.
