Changing rear shock oil 1986 Honda XR250r

Recommended Posts

I just had my rear shock rebuilt by a shop about 30 hrs ago. I would like to change out the oil as part of routine maintenance. The shop used a 3wt oil. The factory manual calls for atf which can vary from 5wt to a 10wt. I would like to use a thicker oil due to shock body wear. What do you think of the atf? The manual also calls for 284psi of nitrogen. Is that a necessary number?

Thanks

I was going to use valvoline maxlife atf . It is synthetic and 10w. The 3wt the shop used gives me a very fast rebound. My concern is the 284 psi shock charge. Is it really necessary and what would be the effects of lower pressure?

That's a seriously high pressure , pressure is related to compression stack stiffness , if it has a really stiff stack it will need more pressure

you can't argue with stupid or Yamaha owners
