Remove SMOG Control in California

Recommended Posts

I recently moved to CA and am riding a 650l with the SMOG controls in place. Being new to CA, I'm unclear if removing them here is a problem. Will I need to bring in the bike for testing at some point or is it safe to remove? Thanks

Once your bike is registered in California, nobody looks at it for any reason unless you get stopped for some traffic infraction or something.  Yes, you can take the smog stuff off and nobody will really care.  And yes, you should keep it just in case.

If you have the stock exhaust still, hang onto that too.  Someday they might require that, although right now nobody cares what sort of pipe is on there.

So which part of California did you move to?

Thanks Pete/Scott,

I'm living in Pasadena and commuting to Westchester. The bike is still registered out of state so I'll get it registered here before doing anything else. I'm running it with stock exhaust as well. I've really enjoyed the versatility of this bike but would like to get it offroad more. Cheers.
