'02 RM250 Subframe Brain Buster

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Picked up an '02 RM250  as a winter project(MN). Subframe is in pretty bad shape(Broken clean through) and has clearly been repaired in the exact spot at least one time.  Rather than deal with putting a bandaid on it, I was hoping to just find a reasonable replacement. There are a bunch of options on Ebay, problem is that they seem to be every year except for 2002. I know not much changed from 01-03, but I sent a message over to a guy that I know well at a Zook dealer, he said the 01 should bolt right up to frame, but that they are different part #'s so might run into issues of plastics/airbox not being a direct fit. Anyone know if the 01-03 subframes are interchangeable? Would same year 125 work?

Just stopped in to a local shop, out of curiosity I asked how much subframe would be from dealer.......just shy of $700 HAHA!  So, looks like it will be eBay or another weld job.  Guy at the dealer said its possible that the frames are identical even though 01,02,03 have different part numbers...Might just have to gamble on it and see what happens.

Just in case someone else comes across this issue, Ordered a subframe off ebay for an 01 RM125/250. It's identical to my 02 RM250.  Paid $49+Ship= Less than 65 bucks for a lightly used subframe.

Take your time on this project, the winters are long in Minnesota...  And post pictures when you can!

Scroll down to catch Eric Gorr's take on the '02 RM250.  I can attest to piston life with the '02 RM250 (I blew one up), personally solved it with Wiseco pistons and changed them regularly:  http://eric-gorr.com/files/pdfs/model_tuning_tips_suzuki.pdf

Hey Zig, I'm considering  about a 2002 RM250 that's all wooded up. Seller says he has a Eric Gorr 265 kit installed with mo betta porting. Could I assume that the delicate exhaust bridges have been improved then? Bike also comes with stock, serviceable OEM cylinder and tons of other parts and mods already done.

I would like to think that because Eric Gorr is the one that has been pointing out that model year RM's exhaust port issue, then hopefully he would have fixed it while he was in there.

If the price is right for you and it's coming with a spare cylinder then I'd have no problem picking it up.  I really liked mine.

I seriously doubt that any RMZ rear sub will fit a 2t RM250 without modifying it.  But there's lots of decent ones eBay, like this one:

Is the Suzuki 2005 RMZ 250 steel frame the exact same frame as the 02 RM steel frame?

Will an 02 RM 250 motor bolt seamlessly to a 05 RMZ 250 Frame / Rolling Chassis?? Thank you

No and no. Will require welding and fabrication.
