Springs in my oil?

I bought my son a 06 ttr125ev. He rode a time or two and it started to sound bad. So I changed the oil and it got worse. I drained it and found chunks, plastic and springs in the oil. 

 So the chunks are aluminum and the springs are steel. I assume the chunks are part of the case. The plastic is from a broken chain guide.  I'm splitting the case tomorrow. I can't figure out where the springs came from. 

Any ideas?

It sure is a mess. But what an education we are getting.

I split the case, a complete tear down. I found nothing damaged, and no evidence of any seals. I did notice that the generator had been replaced ( maybe it broke apart). The plastic did come from the chain guides. The case is intact. I did find one small piece of steel, but can't find where it's from.

The springs look like pieces of the starter clutch assembly.  It is a part known to fail.

Here's a pic of the OEM starter clutch. Are the springs inside the one way assembly (#7 in the pic)? I checked and there is a single spring in the one way assembly, should there be more (see pic)?

I can't find any other parts in the OEM drawings that look as if they have small springs, and there seem to be more than the seals could contain. Am I missing something?

I don't recall. It uas been a while since I replace mine but that little cage that the spring goes around and holds tension disentigrated and there were pieces everywhere.

Is it possible these are leftovers from a previous half ass rebuild? Those metal chunks look like piston skirt pieces. And those springs really look like they’re from seals as mentioned before.

That's what I think has happened.  If so that's great, a few seals and a chain guide and we are back riding.

I was a little afraid that I would reassemble this thing and find out that I missed something.

What sort of shape is the cylinder in? Is the piston oversized?

This is almost definitely a disintegrated starter clutch.
