USA DRZ400E off road only to a KTM 500 EXC-F

141 posts in this topic

Was at the local dealer today ordering new chain and sprockets for the E and they just got a brand new 500 KTM in! Since I've been pondering going street legal dirtbike since in my POS state of New Jersey I can not tag my 2003 E model because it says "off road" on the title I need a bike that's factory legal. I'd love to get a S model DRZ but the fact they are so gutless comared to my E model made me say NO WAY and the SM  version is the same gutless engine as the S so that's a NO also....so here comes the KTM. So what's the feeling on this???

All Betas come with motorcycle titles, even the 2 strokes. Technically you can plate all of them. They also have the RR-S line that comes with blinkers, ect pre installed. If you have a local dealer you might want to check them out before dropping 11k on a KTM.

My '18 Beta 500. You get a lot more for a lot less with a Beta over the KTMs. Also, the bikes don't run as lean as the new KTMs

So the KTM are lean just like the Suzuki 450 motocross and 450 Suzuki woods bike.....and I'm assume there's really no way to richen them up right?

Remap or tuner

Try about $1000+ if you add an exhaust. $700 for just the tuner

The Beta's come ready to ride out of the box. That's why I liked them. They have an onboard GPS too

Otherwise a Beta 390, KTM 500 EXC for a Husky dual sport

Prior to 2009 it was easy... Not today! Having a offroad motorcycle plated is extremely difficult next to impossible...

my feelings on it are that a 500 ktm would be a nice sm but its alot of money that could be spent on something else alot faster and better for the street .. the drz steet versions are designed for longevity .. if you want something to work on you can dam sure accomplish that lol ..

You won't have to worry about "gutless" with the KTM or Beta. I have the DRZ and the 2017 Beta 500. DRZ is great but Beta is awesome. It shaves a bunch of weight and adds a bunch of power and cost $2000 less than the KTM (in Kansas) with factory GPS. Plus with a Beta in your garage you can go to sleep at night KNOWING  that you are a better person than a KTM owner. With the added benefit of being more humble. On a serious note KTM is awesome I think that if you research it you will find that the KTM has a bit more "felt" zip, and the Beta seems to be considered to be more "rideable" (not sure on spelling). fy3uoUuE5rJGio1cIoB1DpCf7GsCURI2kyCX6m8y

Notice how the KTM guys won't even look at the camera! You are on the right track, great bikes.
