Rim size for Honda XR650R

hi,

Standard rims are Front  21x1.6 and Rear 18x2.15  am buying new rims would it be better to buy 21x1.85 and 18x2.50  XR is heavy bike and i ride mainly fire roads

thanks for advice

I'd stay with stock  Stock tire profile/size it typically the best. For fire road riding thought, a trials type tire is a great choice. Though it has more sidewall than you will need, it will be long wearing.

If you go wide rims, you will lose power as you will be using it to rotate a heavier wheel.

I would go with anything but a trials tire, high speed corners (such as those found on fire roads) are one of their biggest weakness, and a heavy bike will trash them hitting rocks/ cattle guards ect. at fire road speeds. If the OP is putting around at 20mph they would probably work fine, but would still be pointless as there is also no need for the traction benefits of trials tires on fire roads. I would leave the rims stock, and install any hard terrain tire, maybe even dualsport tires if you really keep on the fire roads.

Stock size rim is far more versatile....slap on your favorite tire and let it rip...

Stock wheel and a desert tire. Need the higher tire pressure so it won't get to squirrelly at high speeds.

can you recommend a desert tire

thinking to get the Dunlop D606. 130 or 120 on standard 2.15 rim

The d606 didn't work so good for me on the 650r. Even at 4.5psi I could spin the tire at 60+mph on desert roads. I am swapping it out and going with a maxxis maxxcross IT.  The d606 has good tread but doesn't gave enough grip for me. Good for flat tracking corners though lol. If you were near me I would give you the d606 when I put on the maxxis. Pic of the 606

And the maxxcross IT.

Yes it is, performance is good, would be better if I did a piston and cam though. Fitment on mine was a bit off on one of the head pipes, took some finageling to get it on but it's on and is very loud. Neighbors probly hate me coming home at 3am from work lol

I have just put a stage 1 hotcam, Edelbeock and airbox mod in mine (yet to run it , i need new chain slider for swingarm and chain guide, they went brittle in this climate and literally fell of bike in garage)

Have fmf powercore lV exhaust but thinking of getting the XRonly pipe

When i say it's loud, I mean loud. People think the fmf is loud lol I had that on here before with the power bomb header. The core of the race pipe is about 2" all the way through. Just about every mod has been done to my bike besides internal motor stuff. Air box mod, vented panel, tm40 pumper, exhaust.. list goes for days. Just waiting to get my baja bug going so i can take that to work then i will be doing the head, piston and cam I hope. Bug might eat up those funds though.

what is airbox mod, or you mean removing california restrictions ? i meant on mine had done Barnums vented panel

what you think of the TM am thinking to get one. my edelbrock getting old, is also discontinued

attached is how she looks now, but am putting her back in offroad clothes.

am putting in racetech compression valves etc. excel or smPro wheels, would love to do a 680 kit in the future.

Maxxis Desert IT in 120.  My favorite rear tire for my XRR.  What kind of fitment issues with the XRs Only race reverse megaphone setup?  I've been eying this exhaust as well...

The long header tube was pointing at the motor where the collector is. It was probly off 3/4 in or so. I ended up putting something inside the pipe for leverage and pulling it back over so I can get it in the collector. Can't complain to much because I ordered the regular system and then emailed them to change it to a race system and charge me the difference but they didn't. Emailed me back and said they will ship it at no extra cost. Maybe that's why the fitment wasn't so great lol.

The tm40 is great, I want to take it in and get it dyno tuned but funds haven't been there. I think mine is running a bit rich because it's fairly easy to flood if your playing with the throttle before you start it. My bike had the suspension setup by precision concepts for a 230lb rider, I'm 280 and it's a bit soft but it's great. Bike looks fantastic by the way, if you don't need a brake light I have seen guys use a different rear fender for a 450 I think and it looks pretty good.

If you look the rear rim is a 2.5, NOT a 2.15. I know as I have three of them.

Bout to pull the trigger on a TM40, read up on them and it seems their the best choice. I bought my 650r with a edelbrock ( loved it), but parts are no more and bike is about to be built back up from frame.

Where did you guys get your TM40 from??

I bought my TM40 on eBay and then purchased the adapters and jets at either Niche Cycle or Mikunioz. Best mod Ive done.
