2017 ktm 150sx wp aer air forks

just bought a 2017 ktm 150sx for my grandson looking for some recommendations on psi setting for the forks. He weighs 150lbs. top D lower C rider. a few suspension people i have talked to said around 134 psi but that's way to high for him just beat the you know what out of him. after playing with the air found that the forks seemed to work the best for him at 109lbs. Does this seem to low we are currently running 20 clicks out on the compression and 15 clicks out on rebound. just looking to see what other people around his weight are running. 

Wow that's good of you. My son is around same weight (152 lbs) - we run +/- 119 in sand and +/- 116/7 on hard pack - 125sx but around same weight as a 150. However, it does depend on how he rides the bike, type of track and how he likes them set up. Great thing with the AERs is it is so easy to experiment with settings. Good bike by the way.

Seems low, we run 120 in the rocks, 130 sand, 140 moto. Think it needs some suspension work for him

140 lbs in a 125/150 - that's a whole lot of air but again it is down to what the rider wants I suppose. What weight is he? I can only comment what suits us for mx racing. Bob.

I weigh a little less than 150 and on my XC run the forks at 115 or so and they work very very well. I too feel the stock 135 or more is waaay too stiff, regardless of what the manual says. Less pressure works best for me.

I second this, I weigh about 165 with all my gear on and I run 115-118 on my 250xc, but that is mostly single track enduro riding.

Here is an exact way to figure out what PSI to run.  Tie a zip tie to one fork leg fairly tight.  Start out with a higher pressure and work you way down until the zip tie gets pushed down about 2 inches from the bottom of the fork.  If the Zip tie is lower you need to raise the pressure, if it is higher, you need to lower the pressure.  Make sure the suspension is warmed up and run it on a loop that has big impacts/whoops/jumps.  Once you find the right PSI using this method, then use the clickers to adjust comfort and track compliance.

Really good post above - we used to use the oil filter seal  o rings from our 250sxf as travel bands - perfect fit (you can actually buy purpose made bands from suspension companies!)  but you should really run with a travel band on one of the legs anyway - any 45/6 mm diameter o ring will be fine and just roll it down the fork.

Love this ideal will try this weekend. One question though do you put the zip tie on with or without the rider on the bike

I mean this in the nicest possible but I wouldn't use a zip tie - try and get an o ring which is what a sussy company would sell you as a travel band. Just slide it half way up the lower leg and go do your thing on the bike - it will stop wherever the forks fully compress. We aim for 10mm ish above the bottom of the leg on hardpack track with jumps. If you can't locate an o ring suppose a narrow zip would have to do. Bob.

I third this. My Bro has a 2017 300 XC and we both liked the forks better with less air. They were around 10 to 15 less.

You would have to take your forks apart to use an O ring, which is great when you are getting service done (oil change), but not feasible during normal operational circumstances.

We just take the right leg off, pull the plastic protector and roll the o ring down from the top - the 250F oil filter seals are perfect size. (We bought new cones direct from WP and they kindly fit one at their factory. Nice people). Nothing wrong with a thin zip tie apart from being sharpish edged - so as long as you don't bottom out they do fine.

I see people commenting that they're running lower on their xc's and such or in the woods. What is your grandson using the bike for? Moto? Casual? Trail? Remember the 150sx is a moto bike. So the air fork suggested settings are assuming he's going to be blasting around on a moto track. Yes, it can be too stiff for some and too stiff for him right now, as he progresses and rides his bike faster on the moto track, he will find he will probably like it to be a little stiffer.

On edit- I did see you said top D or lower C rider. Never seen D on the moto tracks, around here at least.

I keep mine around 110-115. I weigh around 160 with gear but I am an old and slow woods rider. Depends on how each rider feels on the bike I guess.

I weigh about 145 with gear on my 17 250sxf and I found 120psi perfect for trails. 140psi for track and everything set to comfort setting.

My son has the same exact bike. And he also has a 2018 KTM 125. He weights about 155 dressed out. With the help of a suspension specialist, we started with 104lbs in the woods. Ended up at about 107. When he does moto hitting very large jumps, we go up to 117lbs on his 125. Seems to work for him.

update went with race tech gold valve kit, forks 119lbs. 16 comp. 18 on reb. rear shock 2 1/2 on the high 22 clicks on low and 15 reb. its like a new bike now the kid is ripping it up
