Exhaust options for 2017 S model questions

Ok, I was hoping to keep my bike as stock as possible for as long as possible. Now I am going to rejet and have the air box cut, Can you take out the screens on the stock exhaust to open it up more? Does that even make sense on these bikes? this was a common mod on the TTR 230's we used to own.

 

On the 2017. If I wanted to go with aftermarket exhaust. Do I need the header? I had someone tell me the front pipe on 2017 was sized to get same performance with slip on.

 

I will likely have exhaust pipe selection questions if I decide to go with that soon.

Just leave it stock. The screen is part of the spark arrestor and needed at least in my state.

The aftermarket headers that add power are bigger in diameter for more airflow so yes for added power you should get a full system.

On a DRZ the restriction is the small head pipe that affects flow.It's optimized for low end torque and lower emissions.

Like mentioned above, the stock header is the major restriction in the factory exhaust system. If you want more power out of the exhaust the header needs to be upsized. If you just want more noise than cutting out screens and end caps works.

The stock S/SM system is restricted everywhere.

How far do you imagine you'll mod the motor?

If you don't think you'll ever go bigger than Hotcams 22XX series, I'd go with the FMF Powercore system.

I went from stock to Big Gun, Yoshimura to MRD. I think the MRD flows the best but it is a little loud. Search and decide

I went a similar path. White Bros slip on, Yoshimura RS3 full system and finally MRD SSW. A slip on will make a noticable improvement but if FCRs, cams or bigbores are in the future, save yourself time and money and go straight to MRD.

MRD will not restrict carb, cams, bbk or stroker crank.

Even without the bigbore the RS3 full system was choking off the mid range rush.

Guys, as always, the advise is outstanding. I don't want to mod the engine anytime soon. I might go ahead and buy a exhaust, but for now I just want to ride it as much as possible. I will see how it does after the jet kit, then decide. Thanks again.
