Best rear light / turn signals to replace OEM

Recommended Posts

I have a 2016 DR-Z400SM. I'd like to replace the ugly license plate holder, tail light and turn signals. I have seen some lights that have them all built into one unit. When I search, I find so many different products I don't know what to get.

Any suggestions to clean up the backside of my 400SM?

The DRC Edge tailight with the 12 O'Clock Labs upgrade board and the Thumpertalk Edge license plate bracket will look great and a direct fit to the bike. This will give you a all l.e.d. tail, brake, plate and programmable turn signals in a single unit with a U.S. spec plate mounting bracket.

Cool, but expensive. I've been running the standard DRC Edge with factory blinkers for 10 years now with zero issues.

I have the DRC Edge. Really happy with it and easy to install. If I were to do it again, I may have gone with the Yoshisma (sp?). Very similar and about the same price but it allows you to use the stock signal lights so you don't need to change the front if you want front and back to be the same.

I would do the DRC edge. My bike came used with that kit on it and I love it. Simple, clean and very bright setup.

I want to clean up the backside, but also wanted to be seen by cager's. Those aftermarket tail lights are just too small, so I tucked the stock tail light up under the rear fender with a simple metal bracket bolted up to the sub-frame. Tossed out the signals, hand signals are better seen from behind.

I was under the impression that the DRC Edge was compatible with the stock blinkers. Is this not the case?

Thanks for the ideas! I'm considering the TST Industries plug n play system. It has the LED turn signals inside the single rear light. It comes with plugs that mate directly to the factory electrical system. They have a good video HERE

You're looking at this with the wrong state of mind. Those little lights are WAY brighter than the stock lights are. If you want cagers to see you ditch that silly stock tail light (incandescent bulb) and try the little lights (with LED bulbs) you will be amazed.

Same thing as those little 1AA flashlights that are brighter than a 3C MagLight nowadays. Its the quality and style of the bulb that matters, not how big the plastic reflector cover is over the bulb. Times have changed.

I about crapped my pants the first time I hit the blinker at night, it was extremely bright and lit up the street all around me. I was sold, cause when I bought the bike I thought like you and told myself "these little lights look nice but will get me killed". I changed my mind rather quickly. I love your setup thou. Im big on reusing and repurposing stock parts with a twist on all my machines and projects.

They are compatible if you use the TT bracket. The DRC bracket has smaller holes for the signals and does not line up with US license plates. I kept the stock signals since I don't think they look too bad and like them out away from the tail light.

I have the Euro spec Edge with the bracket with holes that don't line up with USA plates and I have the stock signals and everything works fine. The signals mount with a simple L-bracket and I'm pretty sure they came with the light.

I have the same set up. The L brackets did come with the Edge light.

The tst industries light is great, a little expensive but it fits the bike well. I used their plate mount, but tucked it further in.

I made my own aluminum U.S spec plate and turn signal bracket to adapt my original Edge tailight and mount eons ago and it works great.Nowadays practically everything is manufactured and available for you for most of the common mods.

This is exactly what I want to do. So you didn't mount the plate to the light housing? Can you show a picture of how you mounted it? I would like to tuck it inside as well.

Just made a small 90° bracket and attached it to where the tool bag was

Another vote for the DRC Edge.  I also got the upgraded board for the brighter LEDs but I don't trust people around here to see the integrated turn signals.  I went with the DRC 602's, very happy with them (also had to get a new relay though, to get the LEDs to blink properly).
