Some modding suggestions for ttr230?

Recommended Posts

What's up, I just got my used ( but like new ) TTR 230 2011 for one heck of a deal (1300 with 400$ worth of equipment). Me and my friend have been riding mine and his bike past couple days like crazy, but his crf230f has got alot some acceleration on it. I'm not trying to make mine better than his I just want to explore the world of modding on a dirt bike. Also when starting cold it can take up to like 30 seconds to get it going. What are some mods you guys would suggest trying? I hear people say rejetting will help a whole lot out, if so can you link me to where you bought the jets and how I should install them? I don't want to be doing anything too pricey at the moment because I just bought it.

Have a look at the off road Project TTR230, 5 parts.  Lots of good info.  Here is part one:

http://www.off-road.com/atv/project-yamaha-ttr230-part-1-dirt-bike-suspension-power-and-handling-27615.html

I increased my jets as they suggested and went up to a 14 tooth countershaft sprocket.

I did not remove the baffle in the exhaust, actually I did then put it back as it was brutally loud (I'm old, have tinnitus, trying to keep my hearing etc...)

Also I removed the snorkel from the air box but did not notice a difference and put it back.  My biggest gain was going up in the jets.  easy start (even at -5 deg Celsius), and quick warm up.

Got them from partzila:

288-14343-65-00 - JET,MAIN #130

In my experience, modding can get very expensive very quickly. The first mod I did on my bike (ttr225) was the uncorking mods and matched them with bigger jets. This mod is by far the best bang for your buck. Uncorking mods are free and jets are dirt cheap. Yamaha is forced to ‘choke up’ our bikes to pass california emissions testing, and the uncorking with bigger jets will make a very noticeable increase in power everywhere, and it will make the bike run as it was originally designed to. After my jetting and uncork, I raced a stock crf230 and killed him.

And by uncorking, you mean adding more holes in the air filter for air to travel in and removing the baffle on the muffler? I don't like loudness so I wont be removing the baffle unless its that big of a difference.

Ordering the jets off of amazon soon. It may be a while before I change sprocket as for, I just got the bike I do not want to change much at the moment.

One size bigger front sprocket, and just ride it. It is a great bike.

Sorry for not being clear, i meant opening up the air box not the filter, like drilling holes or cutting the whole top out. I’m not sure exactly what people do on your bike specifically, do a quick search. And if you don’t like louder than done touch the pipe, just air box and jetting

You do not need to order any jets at this point. Gain access to the fuel screw and adjust it.

There is no need to do anything to the airbox. Good on you for keeping the bike quiet.

Change the gearing only if the stock gearing doesn't suit you, stock gearing works well for tight trails.

Simply adjusting the mixture screw will not make your bike any faster unfortunately. Adding more fuel to the mixture without adding more air will make it run rich, therefore making your bike slower. If you want to beat your buddy, the airbox mod + jetting is the way to go

Rejetted, with the air box opened up a bit will make a difference. I did it on my son's 230, it starts better and runs stronger. An FMF Q4 pipe is not very loud, and added to the appearance. Also added the 14 tooth front sprocket, which works better for him.
