redshift Reboot! Alta Motors issues recall of certain Redshift electric motorcycles

Alta Motors, together with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, has just announced a recall of certain Redshift MXR and EXR electric motorcycles.

The 2019 Redshifts debuted two months ago, where the multi-terrain electric motorcycles were lauded as an example of an EV in the motorcycle industry that had made a strong showing in a traditionally loud and proud gas-fueled motorsport.

But now a flaw has been found in the throttle firmware of the electric motorcycles.

According to a letter from the NHSTA:

“Alta Motors (Alta) is recalling certain 2019 Alta Redshift EXR and 2018-2019 Alta Redshift MXR motorcycles. The software for the throttle control may fault if the throttle is rolled forward past the closed position, possibly resulting in a motorcycle stall.”

The issue could cause a power cutout while riding the motorcycle, potentially leading to a crash.

A total of 215 motorcycles are affected by the issue in the recall.

A software update will be applied to all affected motorcycles at a dealer free of charge, and it does not appear that any hardware on the motorcycle is affected.

According to Ultimate Motorcycling, the recall is in effect for certain 2018/2019 Redshift MXRs with VIN range 56PARAEM_KB000367 – 56PARAEM_KB000488 and 2019 Redshift EXRs with VIN range EXR 2019: 56PARAFM_KB000099 – 56PARAFM_KB000191.
