'99 YZ 250 Silencer Interchangeable with 2002?

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. Been looking around for an FMF silencer for my 2002 YZ 250 and came across a used yet flawless FMF Titanium 2 silencer this guy bought new for his 1999 YZ 250. He never used it and sold the bike and is now selling the pipe DIRT cheap. Would this 1999 silencer bolt up on the 02? I've searched around and can't find any info on the compatibility of silencers between these model years...

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Yes, I believe I just put a stock 2002 silencer on my 99

The FMF website shows the '99 and '02 YZ250 share the same expansion chambers

but none of the silencer have matching numbers between the two applications.

My guess would be the silencer's mounting tabs & subframe hole placement aren't exactly the same on both model years.

Single mount silencer will fit, but a double mount will not because of the sub frame difference. The 99-01 is straight across, and the 02 up, rear hanger is about 3" off the mount. I'll shoot a photo tomorrow or you can surf around in my restoration thread and find one.

Thanks for the responses guys. Yeah I noticed the FMF part numbers aren't the same.

Do you think that rear hanger has enough reach to be manipulated into the right ball park and mount up? Or is the silencer going to be too far misaligned?

I do not think it can be changed. I might have something in the shed in AZ. I am heading there mid week, so PM me on Friday, I'll see what I have for 02 up. You might be lucky and I have something. You looking for a sparky, or just an open track pipe?

Thanks man. Looking for an open track pipe. I have a pretty strong preference for the FMF shorty silencers. They seem to work great and I think they sound the best.

Notice the rear mount drops the end down about 3"? the 99-01 is straight across. 79132128-7701-49EB-A487-138FAAFB2A6D.jpeg.28590ce79d677347e5568997efc32210.jpeg2F3D6782-F4F0-450D-ACB7-B73B99055BD0.thumb.jpeg.efc723867f8e3290d524be8f1fd8eff5.jpeg

Although this is a 125, the mounts for 125 and 250 per year are the same.

This gives you a better idea of what I am talking about.

That's great news. And yeah I see what you're saying. Thanks for the picture references. And how do we go about doing a deal on here? I'll be honest I just signed up today so I don't know how it works.

Will do.

And hey I took another look at the guys picture of the silencer, and based on your pictures, it looks like his is actually an 02 and up pipe doesn't it? I attached a screenshot of his picture of the silencer for your reference...IMG_20181015_230430.jpeg
