Sydney AU motocross scence

Recommended Posts

So I'm off to Australia next week and wanted to know if what my chances were of catching anything motocross related before the end of the month.  If that's not possible any recommendations on touristy things to check out would be appreciated.

Ya apparently they have a big Rock in the middle of no where that's popular for some reason. There's the opera house place that looks like a dish rack. Maybe let em dunk ya in the water and do that shark tourism stuff. Be careful though pretty much everything there can kill you. But there's always the T&A at the beach. It is summer down there so it's probably going to be a little on the "Holy shit its hot" side.

are you going anywhere other than sydney?

There is a lot to see there, but being a northern redneck I dont know too much about it (Australia is the other way around, there are more swamps and less teeth up North) the big attractions are the bridge and the opera house. I had a really good Thai meal there whilst on business, there'd be some good restaurants.

Where do you fly in? How long are you here? Do you want to stay in the one area?

Hiring a crappy camper and driving up the coast is the norm.

Not intending to sound condescending, but Make sure you check how big the place is. A large number of people think they'll go from the north to south in a car in one day. Not a chance.

If you're near Newcastle nsw (where I live) on 10 December, we have the f35 jets arriving. Likely to be a bit of a show at RAAF base Williamtown. There will be a Hornet handling display.

Public transport sux outside of capitol city (sydney Melbourne Brisbane Canberra) I don't know about Adelaide and Perth but would guess it's bad.

The main serial killers we've had target back packers, if that risk bothers you.

Surfers paradise is the Vegas of Australia if you're a party person.

If you're loaded up on cash then there's tours like Kakadu. Great Barrier Reef.

Problem is we have a stupid amount of coastline and desert everywhere else.

All east coast has lots of beaches. Lots.

It's been "cool" lately and only been 25-33 Celsius. Will probably get in a few 40c days if your here for a while.

If you're cashed up you could do a dirt bike tour of cape York. I wish I did it when I was young. That gets you to north most point of Aus. I think it's about $6-8000 fully supported (food, bike fuel etc). It will be stinking hot and stinking humid up there though.

Melbourne is where the yuppies and hipsters hang out. Apparently it's great for food.

Sydney has a large Asian and middle eastern population, so lots of their food.

The Rock in the centre is on my bucket list. Will cost a fair bit for you to head out there.

Make sure you get a meat pie and a sausage roll with tomato sauce from various bakery's (they are pretty common) as its our national staple food.

Byron bay is the laid back place for coach goers.

Basically it's beaches and city. Anything outside of that Costs a lot when you don't have a car to get around in (and a 4x4 for anywhere inland)

I fly into SYD and I'm there until 28th.  I'm in CBD and don't mind moving around.  I was hoping to see some wild kangaroos and koala's but a big city like Sydney might not be the place for that.

I guess this is going to sound sarcastic, but if I wanted to actually look at a roo I'd want it in a zoo. In the wild they run (hop?) before you can get close enough for a good look.

On top of what eXc said, make sure you get a good pub meal.

koala in wild...can be done, probably not in sydney. There is the zoo though.

Kangaroos can be seen anywhere with a bit of luck outside city...but not sure it's worth a hire car and a day trip.

In sydney, then I'd be walking around to check out the city. Head over to Manly for surf/snorkeling.

Bondi Beach is apparently the best beach in Aus (yawn...)

Sounds like everything outside of sydney is not realistic for your time frame, unless you want to dedicate the whole trip to it (it's 4+ days to drive up north, depending on how far you want to go)

Lol, most of us have a hard time understanding half the 'kiwis' in our shops ?

I work in a city called Manukau ( man-ew-cow) the aussie chick I brought some stuff off a little while back just couldn't pronounce it, not matter how many times I said it.

Our pies are just better, more, better fillings and softer tastier pastry.

It's not just Me, all the kiwi's I know that have been to Aus say the same, even the one's that live there. The first thing they say when you pick 'em up from the airport is 'take me to get a decent pie!'

My mate from Bundy reckons he could make a fortune importing Kiwi pies.

Having said that, I believe most 'mericans don't have meat pies, so at least an aussie pie will be an experience for them.

And debun, Wombats are way cooler than Koalas.

Go have a look at that funny looking building (the opera house) it is kinda neat. And the bridge is right there too.

from there you can head across to Manly beach on the ferry, it was pretty 'nice' when I went there.

There's a zoo over that way too, Toranga, may be worth a quick look to see some aussie wildlife (didn't go there myself, must have some of it tho). Not as cool as in the wild, but Koalas don't do much anyway.

Newtown typically has bands over weekend. Train will get you there.

Inside the city..

There's a fair bit of history around "the rocks" in sydney as there was a large number of convicts that built it. It's one of our standard school excursions. The rocks is just around from opera house.

There used to be a Jewish museum too with holocaust stuff. (1990s)... I was a kid, all I remember was horror and a lady there that was in a camp talking to us.

Circular quay has the opera house and bridge. Can also do to east and go through botanic gardens. On the other side is "Mrs Macquarie's chair" which is a great view of city day or night and is probably the most taken photo location for sydney.

If you're Into photography there's heaps of spots to go.

You can walk over the bridge at car level and then head east and under bridge and around there is good for photos.

Luna park is Australia's attempt at a board walk thing we see in USA movies. That will take you 45 seconds to see. Haha. It's on the north side of bridge.

There's a spot where the woman in the red dress was filmed (the matrix) it that interests you.

Kings cross is the more sleezy area of sydney, but has improved.

I'm not sure if you can get opera house tours, but if you can get a back stage tour it is interesting. I had a friend that worked there so I got a real back stage tour and it was amazing all the little tunnels and hide always and secret doors. Lots of design that you don't see from the outside. Was much more interesting than the outside.

You can pay to walk up the top of bridge.

You can get a whole day transport pass and just spend he day exploring. Public transport is not cheap though.

Darling harbour is the other tourist spot that everyone goes to. There is also the exhibition centre which may have something of interest on and also the museum. Sometimes there's a navy ship there to go on.

There's a casino.

Fair enough. Could just be what you're used to. I'll ask my kiwi friends that have been here since they were young but have gone back pretty regularly.

Always wanted to go to Nz. It's on my bucket list.
