2006 YZ450 Supermoto Project

Recommended Posts

Hey guys! So I just bought this 2006 YZ450 supermoto off a kid in my area. It looked pretty decent online but boy was I horrified when I saw it in person. It was absolutely filthy from being ridden on the salt and looked like it had never been cleaned. That wasn't the main issue though... he let me ride it and boy was it amazing. Felt light years lighter and faster than my 01 WR426. I was convinced even though I knew it had been totally neglected by this kid.

Needless to say I ended up with it 3 days later after I sold my Miata so I could pay for it. The following 4 days after I brought it home were spent taking it apart and inspecting everything. It is currently sitting in my garage with the head and cylinder off while I finish up another semester of school.

Anyway, I wanted to start a build log while I clean it up and make it mine. I should also add that I FOUND THE ORIGINAL OWNER here on TT. This is the thread that I saw it in https://thumpertalk.com/forums/topic/1057654-2006-yz450f-sumo-project/. I thought "boy, my 06 also has a 07 black stator cover and 08 shorty exhaust. Wait, it also has a temperature sticker on the cylinder, and a Pro Action sticker on the shock and the same exact headlight!"

Some pictures of when I looked at it the first time followed by what it looks like now

Let me know if you want any more info on it and I'd be happy to answer. Also, if you want to see more and I haven't posted anything just drop a comment and it'll remind me. This is the first time I've made a build log.

How is the headlight and tail light powered? I thought the 06's are like my 09 and the stator is too small for lighting.

There's a lead acid battery in the air box. You can see it it one of the pictures being held to the sub frame with like 20 zip ties, crushing the air filter.

I've got a diagram drawn out that I want to try. I'd use a reg/rect with an LED bar headlight. I think if I wired up a dimmer to the light bar I could get away with that and an LED tail light.

I see it now. I must have missed the picture last night. Can you get me the physical size of the battery by chance? I'm trying to supermoto mine but I'm having a hard time finding a battery that will fit in the box. Thanks!

I'd take a measurement but I won't be home for 3 weeks. What kind of battery are you trying to get? This lead acid one seems way overkill and weighs about 6lbs. I think any lithium battery would be a much better option.

I'm just looking for something that fits so I can look for something smaller or light weight

There's honestly a lot of room in the air box. I'd say just buy a cheap lithium one off eBay for $15
