Shoulder Protection

Well it's time for a new chest protector/roost protection.  I was close to getting an under the jersey set up but I am a little worried about shoulder protection.  Anyone have any recommendations for good shoulder protection?  I am wide open to suggestions.  Please help!

Dirt bike aftermarket is weak on shoulder protection options. Ive been looking for xl type chest protector/ shoulder protection options too for a long while. Im using an old set of acerbis xl that isnt made anymore. I need an upgrade.  Imthinking I might even get another sport shoulder pads and maybe adapt a chest protect to it. There are already threads on chest protectors here.

Fox titan pro body armor. Gold standard and not that expensive at about 150

i also where a football padded shirt underneath for some added protection of shoulder, collar and ribs. 

Ive had injuries in this area and that pain lasts a long time

I use a Fox airframe.

I have stuffed shoulders, and I have had plenty of offs with the airframe, so far so good. It had the best shoulder coverage I could find when I went looking.

I have an older Fox chest protector that has suspended shoulder pads like football stuff plus bicep pads. The extra shoulder protection is nice and the bicep pads invaluable for woods riding.

Fox Titan Jacket has worked well for me for the last four years or so. Bounced shoulders off of trees, rocks, sand.

Hit a tree so hard the mesh from the jacket left a pattern on my shoulder, but no shoulder damage other than a slight bruise.

So I have worn the EVS g6 jacket and really liked it until I took hard fall last September. I managed to land on the humoral head and smack dab between the pads on that piece of gear.  This off resulted in a laberal cartilage tear and now I’m 4 weeks post op.  The roost protection subject is of high interest to me. I’ve narrowed my search to the Fox Raptor or the TLD 5955.  They seem to have similar shoulder coverage. Not deltoid protection to be clear. It’s the humerol bone I’m concerned about.

I've run a Fox Raptor and currently rock the Leatt 5.5 Pro and both did a good job when whacking trees in harescrambles. I'm in the southeast and we get a lot of tight pine sections where you clang into trees pretty easily and both protectors have held up well.

I had a bruise pattern like that from my Fox compression jacket, only a lot darker.  The first time I wore my new jacket was on Slickrock, UT.  That sandstone doesn't give at all.   I landed on my left shoulder hard enough to crack the outer plastic  pad cover.  At first I was pissed that it cracked.   Then I realized without it I probably would have had a broken collar bone.  Yep, $150 for the jacket was way cheaper than an ER visit.   

I immediately ordered another one.

+1 on the Fox Titan. It has saved me more than a few times from certain down time from shoulder, elbow, forearm and likely collar bone nasties...even the back plate has saved me when I came off backwards over jagged rocks and roots. It breathes well so I’ll usually just put on a thin long sleeve under it and nothing over top unless temps are low. The included kidney belt is a nice feature also, and it’s light enough that once you wear it a couple of times you barely know it’s there. I’ve benefited from it enough by now, that I won’t saddle up without it.

I tried the Leatt 5.5 which felt awesome and I felt invincible, but it was a little bulky. I am currently using the titan knockoff from eBay and due for an upgrade.

check out the atlas guardian under or over body armor, has removable shoulder pads and eblows CE rated as well. I was using a fox raptor before but i found the shoulder pads annoying also alot bulkier making putting on a backpack a struggle.

I've been using the Fox with the suspended shoulder pads. They have been good for me but the lower edge of the bicep guards have gouged into my arms and peeled skin on a couple of crashes. I have scars on both arms from this.

I have both, the fox titan an dthe leatt 3df. Probably I am one of few who dont rate the leatt very good. Its superlight, nice to wear as you dont feel its there, its very good if a Leatt neck brace is used.

the disadvantages I see are

• once wet you almost cant get it off your body except you can move like an anaconda
• shoulder protectors are small and dont stay in place, can and will be shifted easily
• elbow/forearm protectors are too short

I have a lightly used Fox Titan size medium (I wear men’s jacket size 41 for reference) I’d be willing to part with. PM me if so.

I switched to Leatt Fusion 3.0 for the integrated neck brace, but the Titan is legit, especially if you want under-jersey.

I like the Fox Titan I have my third one in the meantime but you should know that they also have a dangerous disadvantage. Probably all protectors have disadvantages but you should know about what happened to me.

I crashed at about 70mph and slid over tarmac before I hit a concrete wall. My right forearm/elbow protector was pulled away from my forearm when I slid over the road and then smashed against my forearm when I hit the concrete wall. As a result the outer plastic shell was pushed through the protecting foam with brute force and penetrated it on its way into my arm and left me with 0.60 inch deep cut.

No bad feelings, the protector jacket was not designed for road use but we had to use the road for about a mile leading from one forest into another, so I had no choice. This would have happened probably with most jackets and I just mention it that you can see that weird things my happen.

Thats the left sleeve, you see the tarmac was very rough as I wore a jacket and jersey over it and sliding with 70 over it was no fun...

If you look close you can see the plastic edge of the outer shell has penetrated the foam (and then my arm)

 

It looks like a little cut but in fact I could see the bone when my mate dabbed the blood...
