Yeh, I have been out there a couple times when it was real windy. You could not even think about climbing to the top of a ridge wthout getting blown over. Oh well, I am going regardless.

Now if you trust that?????? I usually take about the middle of those two since Ocotillo Wells is about mid way...

And this has NOTHING to do with this weekend but had to post it!!! This is the start of the race I ran and DNF'ed about 5 weeks ago. Put's butterflys in my stomach and gets my blood pumping just watching it.

40 to 50 mph winds! ? I have been out there in total white outs! Not exactly the most fun you can have...I've seen my buddys bike in front of me shift 6-8" on a ridge trail which is a real Butt Pucker when you only got 10" to work with! Ahhh yeah... 20-30 mile an hour winds are one thing but 40-50 may be sand blasting yer rigs!

Got to light a candle to the Wind Gods tonite. Heck, I may have to turbo charge it and cut the head off a goat to appease the Godz.

Yeah, the ones where you sitting in the enclosed playing cards drinking all day and can't see the fire pit 15' outside the door? Those are actually fun, we resort to trailer entertainment... Heck one time we had 3 of us in the back of the Exploder playing cards on the cooler. We were TOSSED within an hour or so and could care less about the winds!!! Drinking card games are the cure for that situation!!!

Khris - Are you concerned at all about the red sticker police? I saw them out there a week before the season opened in October? I'll be there on the pig. I want to do an early 60 mile Superstition run and then a late morning 60 mile run down to the sea via gas dome and then over to the tower and back. Rokatt knows the drill which can be done in about 2 hours each if your moving. As for the wind - ride with it!

You know, I've only been randomly checked once in the 18+ years of riding out there and that was at least 10 years ago. I've been checked since but it's been as I was being pulled over for riding a wheelie across the bridge at the iron door. Honestly I'm not the least bit concerned. I guess after I get nailed once then I'll worry but till then... LOL, oh and heck, I got a green sticker on my Canadian bike anyways!!! ?

Ya, I was thinking about that too. My bike has a green sticker, though it shouldn't be (DMV screw up) and Brandy's quad is red sticker. I hope we don't run into any problems.

Well, I wanted to go North to avoid the heat, but it sounds like a great group is going to be out there. You can count us in for Friday night and at least through Saturday.

I hope to get there sometime around 7:00 Friday night. I'll be driving a blue Dodge Dakota with a TTR and a KTM in the back. I second the motion on avoiding the Cabanas near the port-a-potties, the wind seemed to be blowing from the right side to the left the last time we were there!!!!

best way to get there from mission viejo area? i dont have a problem going over ortega to the 15 - or is it quicker to take the 10 to the 86 to the 78 ?

which way do you think??

The best way is to come down the 5 south to highway 76 (Oceanside)and go east on 76 until it dead ends into 79. Make a left on 79 and then a right on S2. Take S2 until it dead ends in to 78. Left on 78 and drop down into the desert. When you come to the Blu Inn (gas station), Cahuila trail will be up on the left about a mile. From Mission Viejo it will be about 140 miles. From Oceanside it is 100 miles to Hidden Valley.

i am looking at a map - can i just take the 78 from the 5? or is that way alot longer? less grades? mapquest from my place to julian says 99 miles on the 78 ?

i have never been on the 76 or the 78 except the glamis side

76 is more direct - I would guess by 5-10 miles. It has one short section of switchbacks after Pauma casino which is a fairly steep gade versus 78 wich has a much longer gradual grade. I also have a 23' Superlite and was pulling it with a 5.4L Expedition which did OK (about 25 mph through the short steep section - fully loaded with 2 quads, 3 bikes, and water). I decided to dump it and get an Excursion 4X4 with the 6.0L diesel - it can pull your teeth out. The backside of 78 after Julian has some sharp switchbacks on the descent which will slow you down - especially at night. I live close to both 76 and 78 and prefer 76 as it is a more open road than 78. The only negative about the 76 is if you hit it at rush hour it is stop and go between east Oceanside and the 15, but if you hit it after 7:00 you should be fine. The 78 also slows a bit at rush hour, but then again what freeway doesn't on a Friday night in California? Both will get you there within 15 minutes of each other. There is a dump station at the Ranger station on your way out so you can lighten your load. I'm not bringing out my trailer as my son is working, so I'll get there early Saturday and run hard all day.

I have always taken the 15 76 route, until a couple weekends ago, went 10, 86, 78. It is about 25 miles further, but no elevation change. Just flat land doing 70 mph the whole way. Ended up getting there quicker and using less fuel.
