Please Help!!! Idle and starting issue

Recommended Posts

Good morning folks, I have an 08 CRF250R that I just got. It was super hard to start. I took it to get the valves shimmed and looked at over all. He said valves were tight now only starts if idle screw is screwed in quite a bit will kick and start easy just will idle high I noticed it likes to have mixture screw one turn out. Once started I’ll bring idle down and it’ll idle fine “sometimes” but always need to turn idle screw way up to start. It won’t start at all with choke on. And if I try turning on choke will cause it to die. Also need to pull hot start to turn on either cold or hot. Any help greatly appreciated. The mechanic who worked on it said It has a 50 pilot and a 185 main, and 180 leak- didn’t think that even existed. I’m at 2,800 ft above sea level.

I would think that the 50 pilot jet is too big for that altitude as a stock pilot jet is a 42. In my 250R with a PC dual exhaust, I’m running the 42 pilot but the fuel screw is at 3ish turns out. I would say drop down to a 48 or 45 pilot jet and tune from there

Hope this helps[emoji1303]

I’ll definitely try it, it also has a Vortex CDI, FMF Exhaust with a sticker on the heads that reads fastheads.com dont really know what it all means but what you said about the pilot jet sounds on the money. Thank you!!

You’re very welcome man! You seem to have a pretty tricked out CRF! The vortex ignition, fmf exhaust, and the Fastheads cylinder head are all great performance mods. The fastheads head is probably potted and has better valve seats.

Hope you get everything running good

Ordered those jets today hopefully that does the trick. Would there be a reason why they had that original  setup?
