Test shifting on the bench

Recommended Posts

How easy should it be to go through the gears when just bench testing the transmission after the bottom end was just rebuilt? Mine will shift through all the gears but sometimes will get hung up and ill have to fiddle with the counter shaft back and forth to get it to engage. Seems neutral to first is the most finicky. I had all the gears off the shafts and pre lubed everything with a fairly thick assembly lube instead of oil so maybe the thicker lube is causing it to hang up a bit. Once running with warm motor oil should it be good to go? Gears, washers and forks are all in the right order.

Im hoping so. Maybe should have just used oil.

Took my heat gun and blew warm air down inside the transmission to see if i could warm up the assembly lube. It worked and now it shifts good. I guess lucas assembly lube in a cold basement is a little thick for transmissions.

I've never had a motorcycle transmission that would shift through all the gears when fully stationary.
