Can someone tell me what has failed for this to happen[emoji849][emoji36]

Generator gasket seal failure, if you dunked it in a stream, or just routine washings, the el-cheap-o plastic covers leak like a sieve.  You of course can save this area, but get ready for some heavy duty cleaning. Wd-40 is your friend! Scotch brite pads on the rotor, watch the raised tab for the ignition on the wheel, it looks like a thick piece of flat metal in a square welded on. lightly sand it. I would first soak the whole area in wd-40, then slowly use the scotch brite pad on all surfaces. You may have to pull that rotor off, and clean up the lectrics! Shop manual is mandatory. find a alloy cover and fresh gasket as it seals better. once clean, dry it off with a clean shop rag, Now take reading with your Ohm meter, making sure everything is groovie. Then lightly coat every thing with some more wd, then you should be ok. Fire it up, and be careful when washing it!

Thanks heaps, is there a chance that the bearing on the left hand crank or even left hand crank seal need replacing?

Quick test is grab the rotor there and wiggle up and down, if its solid your gold. There can be a tiny in out wiggle, but up and down should be solid. Local Honda dealer is your best friend, or try Honda parts on line, there should be one, failing that, go to the pep boys get a sheet of gasket, take your cover and coat the mating surface with some 10w-30, set it on the gasket to print it, carefully cut out the shape with an exacto knife, bam your gold....
