Need To Find Make And Model Of Engine

Recommended Posts

Hi

I Need To Find The Make And Model Of My Engine Because I Need A Barrel And Piston For It. The Engine Is Out of A M2R J1 Warrior And From What I Have Searched It Has A Displacement Of 223cm3. Here Are The Photo Of The Engine.565636852_20190721_1656501.jpg.f26c4abbbce3a317ea684d27d018aae4.jpg1832056578_20190721_1656331.jpg.f50f36604e86094adb008bbba0b5422d.jpg787813653_IMG-20190722-WA00231.jpg.ce66f3187ac298e84af3f89a9a1efd9d.jpg1446921245_IMG-20190722-WA00051.thumb.jpg.37f9b9a2f912835e4d46c26fa16567b9.jpg938486404_20190721_2215181.jpg.eb94697d679a44995126e4cd90c4708a.jpg1069956704_20190721_2215091.thumb.jpg.0320f08f5676623f08d0a2d0e095840b.jpg1677134537_IMG-20190722-WA00192.thumb.jpg.72293a16f5c219574e7969fee86cad60.jpg248062068_IMG-20190722-WA00321.thumb.jpg.062cb19afcf30a1f004890ddcd6d37b5.jpg226768671_IMG-20190722-WA00221.thumb.jpg.e20d816dd75f161b9457f232c0c3f4ea.jpg

Hi Crf James

I Am Located In The UK.

I believe I may recognize some of the marking on your engine as I have been researching sources for parts on what I believe is a smaller displacement little brother to your engine.

I can see the “YT” markings on your valves and wanted to see if your head cover and head are marked with “TY/IN” like this?

Therein lies the rub. From what I have been able to piece together the engine is manufactured by a company named Jiangmen Tyan Metal Industries, aka Tyan. Thus the “TY” markings. My engine is a TY189 and you have the larger TY223 often marketed as a 230cc. They both appear to uses 65.5mm pistons so the 223 obviously has a longer stroke. The engines are loosely based off the CRF150F/230F design but the parts are not a direct match.

I do not have a complete list of brands that use these engines but here in the US, SSR sells the SR189 but not a 223cc variant. Thumpstar also uses the engines but apparently only sells their 189 and 223 as the TS-X 189 and TS-X 230 but only in Australia and New Zealand. Bosuer aka BSE and Kayo also appears to use Tyan engines in some of their bikes, but I believe those bikes are only sold in India.

Not sure if you have any access to those brands in the UK. The only place I have found for a cylinder and piston for the 223cc are aliexpress. I can’t confirm the listing details as I have not personally ordered one (I am trying to see if I can locate a source for the head) but the specs listed for the cylinder and piston appear to match your measurements. For $75 US it might be worth taking a gamble and ordering one to see if it fits your engine. I am guessing it will.

On a side note, I see your head is marked TY200 while the head on mine is simply marked 230. Curious as to what size valves your bike has?

Dfast - Do you have a model # for the Zongshen CB engine you believe it’s based off of? I would love to compare specs to see.

I do believe you are correct in that it is based on another design copied by many chinese manufacturers, but I believe Tyan made some modification to head cylinder design and these mods would keep the Zongshen top end from functioning properly.

Well this is why I think there are the same because if you go look up big bore kit‘s Zongshen for there FMM169 or CB 250 engine  Family (230cc)  if you look at the engines that will fit they will list a bunch of different model numbers and brands it’ll fit it’s a Honda 60s engine Honda made changes to the engine but the Chinese engine is very close to the old school CB used on XR and XL in the 70s early 80s  Until they went to the four valve engine, web cams can custom grind a cam for CB engine (it costs more than a roller cam for a v8!!)

Although I would love for Zongshen parts to fit as they would be easier to find, I don’t believe they will work.

The 169fmm has a 69mm bore. The OP’s engine (223cc) as well as all of my engines (189cc) all have a 65.5mm bore.

When I searched for Zongshen 165fmm cylinders (which have a 65.5mm bore), the cylinders are different in quite a few different aspects.

Here are some photos from AliExpress to illustrate the differences.

Zongshen cylinder:

Tyan Cylinder:

The height of the cylinders is also different.

169FMM - 77mm (close to the Tyan 223 but the bore is wrong)

165FMM - 81mm

Tyan 223 - 76.5mm

Tyan 189 - 69mm

I actually have 3 of these engines now and have torn into the top end on 2 of them. The 3rd is brand new and is sitting in the box waiting to be installed.

The engine on your bike may be a Zongshen but the OP and I have engines made by Tyan.

Perhaps we should take this up using direct message as to not hijack the OP’s thread [emoji51].
