XR650L Need some advice from the vets

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. I'm in the market for another bike. I had recently purchased a WR250F and was super bummed (got a lemon) and now I'm heading back to the XR world. I don't know all that much about the 650 motor especially the newer models but I have found a couple in my area that look decent. Most are 05-06s with around 4-7k on the odometer. The one that I really like is a 2015 that has 11k on it and also has quite a few mods on it. The guy openly told me he rode the thing all over the place but has also maintained it how it's supposed to be. I'm not sure if 11k is something to be concerned with or not. For some dumb reason these bikes in my area go for $3-$5k.

Here are the ones I'm looking at. I need a reliable, hop on it and go bike 70/30 woods and road. Thoughts?

it has never been "used"

Yeah.............. still has the reflectors, rear pegs look good and boot wear on frame by front pegs is very minor.

I bet the oil is golden and clear.

well maintained on the outside ............... inside I would expect no difference

Looks great, nice price too.

Use GOOD oil and change it as required and you will love it.

Did he give you the Carb jetting and mod list.

It looks like all the mods have been done to get it right.................. great job man!

No he didn't give me a mod list. I have just been rummaging through some of the parts that he gave me in a box and putting together my own list. This thing has a JT sprockets front 14 tooth on it. Which is probably going to come off and a primary drive wide sprocket is going to go back on. The last thing I want to deal with is replacing a countershaft. But everything else seems to look good. Has the rox handlebar risers, a twin filter on it. It's been uncorked and rejetted for the FMF. I suppose it basically has all your standard mods. I'll be ordering an oil temp dipstick here shortly. and probably doing an oil change since it hasn't been done since last season. Anybody have any input on the oil cooler situation? from what I've read it seems that some people think they are pointless and some people think that they are helpful. I've heard that they reduced temperatures around 200 degrees. Which to be honest any reduction in temperature in my opinion is worth doing. What's the best kit you can get for this that bolts up. I'm also thinking about getting an XR only skid plate but I was having an issue navigating their site last night on my phone for the skid plate.

Thanks for all the info guys funny thing my wife washed my pants last night. Those pants have the bill of sale and the title in them. When I asked her why didn't she empty the pockets why wouldn't you empty the pockets before you put a load of laundry in she snorted and said you can do your own laundry. I wasn't too happy about that type of response but married life... Is what it is.

I run 220-260 avg without the oil cooler in Florida ................. I even took off my tank shrouds.............

yes on the primary drive sprocket or even the Fritzco sprocket

I always run conventional Honda GN4 oil................ they also have a synthetic ..............But so does everyone else..........

I keep it simple on the oil changes........... every 10 tanks or  a hard ridin' day in the woods.

Skid plate holds more dirt and mud........and keeps wind off the motor as well (not good)............more trouble than its worth in my area.........................
